All aboard for a creative twist on a classic sandwich! These “Submarine Sandwiches” are a fun way to serve a filling meal, with their clever porthole design making them a visual treat.
Ingredients
- For the Sandwiches:
- 1 large baguette
- Your choice of filling (e.g., tuna salad, chicken salad, or deli meats and cheese)
- 1 tablespoon olive oil or melted butter
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- Optional: Sliced cheese for melting, if using a hot filling
- For the Filling (Tuna Salad Example):
- 1 (5-ounce) can of tuna, drained
- 1/4 cup mayonnaise
- 1 celery stalk, finely chopped
- 1 tablespoon red onion, finely chopped
- Salt and black pepper to taste
Tools
- Serrated knife
- Small spoon or melon baller
- Small round cookie cutter or a sharp knife for portholes
- Baking sheet (if toasting)
Instructions
- Prepare the baguette. Use a serrated knife to cut the baguette into individual sandwich-sized portions, about 6-8 inches long.
- Hollow out the bread. Using a small spoon or a melon baller, carefully hollow out the inside of each baguette piece, leaving about a 1/2-inch wall on all sides and the bottom. Save the removed bread for another use, like making breadcrumbs.
- Create the portholes. This is the key step! Use a small, round cookie cutter to cut out one or two “portholes” on the side of each baguette piece. If you don’t have a cookie cutter, you can carefully use a sharp knife to cut out small circles.
- Prepare the filling. If making tuna salad, combine the drained tuna, mayonnaise, celery, and red onion in a bowl. Mix until well combined, then season with salt and pepper.
- Fill the submarines. Spoon your chosen filling into the hollowed-out baguette pieces.
- Optional: Toasting. For a warm submarine, brush the outside of the bread with olive oil or melted butter mixed with garlic powder. Place the sandwiches on a baking sheet and toast in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 5-7 minutes, or until the bread is golden and crispy. If using cheese, add it to the top of the filling before toasting.
- Serve. Serve your “Submarine Sandwiches” immediately, either warm or cold. The portholes will offer a fun glimpse of the delicious filling inside!
